Alcohol proves to be the sedative agent to many people and is believed to cause instantaneous adverse effects to the body. However, these effects are of various types and its effects are entirely depending on the individual. Alergy. The alcohol or ethanol as it is also known is broken down by the liver enzymes just within a few minutes of its consumption.
These liver enzymes are known as Alcohol Dehydrogenase that converts alcohol or ethanol into acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is then transferred to vinegar by these enzymes, and if the person’s liver is unable to break down the alcohol easily and yet alcohol is consumed, problems known as alcohol allergy may develop. Antibiotic and antifungal medications may reduce the effect of Alcohol Dehydrogenase and may cause the oriental flush syndrome.
Many of the ingredients of wine and beer are responsible of causing the allergic reaction. Especially there are two basic ingredients, a person can react to that are used to make the beverages and preserve the alcohol. Alcohol consumption may activate discharge of histamines in the body. Histamine uses Aldehyde Dehydrogenase for its metabolism like alcohol. This causes allergic reactions such as: Nasal congestion, Mild Flushing of skin within minutes of consuming alcohol, sensation of heat, severe headache, intense facial flushing, abdominal discomfort, drop in the blood pressure, heart burn itchy skin and vomiting. The usual cause of vasomotor rhinitis is alcohol.
